MUI Installation - Example of East Asian Supplemental Language Support Deployment
Description Application where clients access the web via a browser housed on Windows 2003 Server. These users may browse to Cantonese, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Tagalong, Vietnamese, and Spanish based web sites. Some languages do not show up properly until they go to a website such as http://chinese.yahoo.com and allow the language pack installation to complete. Objective: To find a method of performing these steps in an automated fashion with SMS.
Research This research is broken into two areas; Language Pack and Multi-Lingual User Interface (MUI). Language Pack The Language Pack Installation kicked off by going to http://chinese.yahoo.com performs the same action as checking the “Install files for East Asian languages” box in the Regional and Language Options control panel applet.
In reviewing knowledge base article 289125
– “How to create the regional and language settings for an unattended installation of Windows Multi-Language Version” it discusses how you can configure an answer file that contains [Regional Settings] and then apply these settings by executing rundll32.exe. To test this, I created a regopts.txt file as shown below:
…and ran the following command: rundll32.exe shell32,Control_RunDLL intl.cpl,,/f:"c:\regopts.txt" Note: the above command will write to a log file windows\regopts.log …after installation, I reviewed the Regional and Language Options Control Panel applet and verified the “Install files for East Asian languages” box was checked. Then I ensured I could browse to http://chinese.yahoo.com and characters were presented as they should. Note: Everything is in English, but the web page now shows up correctly (see Appendix). Multilingual User Interface (MUI) AT&T has decided they also would like to deploy the Chinese MUI. FAQ and Benefits of MUI can be found in the MUI FAQ
AT&T already has retrieved the MUI for Chinese 0404.MSI. To test how this can be installed we ran the following msiexec /i 0404.MSI /q /norestart /l*v c:\MUI_0404.log Note: We rebooted manually. In order for users to see Chinese at the Ctr+Alt+Del screen, on the startup menu and within Internet Explorer (see Appendix), etc… You’ll need to go within Control Panel | Regional and Language Options and specify Chinese as Language Used in menus and dialogs
So, what if we want all users to have Chinese? The MUI CD contains a MSINotes.htm that talk about the defaultuser=1 and currentuser=1 parameters. So, let’s say User1, User2, and User3 have a profile on the server. If you run the MSI with the currentuser=1 then User1 will have Chinese, however User2 and User3 will still have English. Any new users created (i.e. User4) will also have Chinese by default because of the defaultuser=1 parameter. How do we get User1 and User2 to change to Chinese in an automated fashion? Note: For existing customers you will have to copy the default profile with all changes made to the TS Server to affect existing scenario. SMS Deployment To deploy with SMS, two packages where created with the following settings and files; MUI Chinese (0404) and East Asian Language. East Asian Language The East Asian Language package is a simple batch file that checks the Install Files for East Asian languages boxes in control panel. The package source looks as follows:
The contents of regopts.bat are as follows: echo [RegionalSettings] > %temp%\regopts.txt echo LanguageGroup = 7,8,9,10 >> %temp%\regopts.txt rundll32 shell32,Control_RunDLL intl.cpl,,/f:"%temp%\regopts.txt" /s:"\\config1dc\Win2003SP1\i386" You May notice the /s:”\\config1dc\Win2003SP1\i386” directory, you want to make sure that your machine accounts have access to this share and files(NTFS). For example, I added “Domain Computers” with Read/Execute permissions. This is because when run under the SMS Client, it will be running under the system context. Other notes: - The command line was simply “regopts.bat”
- Program was setup to run whether or not a user is logged on – which causes it to run under the Administrative context.
- The default No action specified was selected. This is because we’re going to set up a dependant program chain and the second program will initiate a reboot. If you decided to install this program by itself, its recommend to reboot.
MUI Setup The MUI setup package is the 0404.MSI. The package source looks as follows:
Other Notes - The command line used within the SMS Program is as follows: msiexec /i 0404.MSI /q /norestart /l*v %windir%\system32\ccm\logs\MUI_0404.log
- The program specifies that SMS Restarts Computer
- Program was setup to run whether or not a user is logged on – which causes it to run under the Administrative context.
- The program was setup to depend on the East Asian program running first:
Advertisement An advertisement that kicks off the MUI (which in turn kicks off the East Asian Supplement) was created to run from distribution point and scheduled mandatory
Appendix – Look and Feel Windows 2003 English – default installation You’ll notice that not all the characters show up correctly.
Windows 2003 w/East Asian Language Support (after reboot) You’ll notice everything is in English except the web page itself, but everything on the web page shows up correctly.
Windows 2003 w/East Chinese 0404.MSI MUI (after reboot)

Disable Shutdown Event Tracker in Windows 2003
To disable Shutdown Event Tracker perform the following: - Open Group Policy, then load the group policy you want to apply the change to.
Note: On a computer that is not a part of a domain you can set this feature locally by running GPEDIT.MSC from the Run command. For example, if you want the setting to affect the entire domain, edit the Default Domain GPO, or another GPO on the domain level. - Expand Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System.
- Double-click Display Shutdown Event Tracker.
- Select Disabled.

FSRM error when accessing Storage Reports Manager
I found a fix for a very tricky File Server Resource Manager FSRM problem. In Windows Server 2003 R2 Microsoft introduced a new reporting feature called FSRM. It will create reports for all kinds of file level stuff like duplicate files, disk usage by user etc... Anyway's the problem I ran into was when you open the FSRM.msc and click on Reports you get a very unhelpful error message. "An unexpected error
has occurred. Please check application event log for more information." Ok so if you check the event logs you find Event Type: Error Event Source: FSRM Event ID: 0 Description: An unexpected error occurred in the File Server Resource Manager MMC snap-in at Microsoft.Storage.SrmMmc.ReportTask.SaveChanges(ISrmReportManager reportManager) at Microsoft.Storage.SrmMmc.PropertySheet.OnOkButtonClicked(Object sender, EventArgs eventArgs) Value
does not fall within the expected range. at Microsoft.Storage.SrmMmc.ISrmReportManager.CreateReport(_SrmReportType reportType) at Microsoft.Storage.SrmMmc.ReportTask.SaveChanges(ISrmReportManager reportManager) For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp . Operating System: Windows 2003 Ok not really all that helpful. After enabling logging for FSRM I found the following.. service\globalstore\globalstoremanager.cpp(0639): CGlobalStoreManager::VerifyName: - Invalid character '_' This pointed to the hidden system folder on the root of the C drive. C:\system volume information\srm\reports I unhid this folder and give myself permission to \system volume information and all subfolders which included \srm\reports I found old reports here with a underscore in the name. So to fix the issue you simply need to delete the SRM folder and subfolders. Restart the File Server Resource Manager and Reports and the SRM folder is recreated. At this point the "An unexpected error has occurred. Please check application event log for more information." error was gone and I am once again able to create reports TIPS: If you haven't done so already remove any old reports under Windows\System32\SRM or from the location you specified to store your reports. Also never save the reports with an underscore in the name. Up Link Partner http://louisshanks.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!913464CD152C839E!184.entry
